#SCJC Day 23 - The Descending Bass Line

via Songwriters Circle blogs by admin on 1/24/11

The Songwriters Circle January Challenge Day 23 - Descending Bass Line Songs

Quoting Paul McCartney again, I don't know why, perhaps he has had more to say about songwriting over the years, anyway he once said that he would never again write any more descending bass line songs because it is just too easy.

If it's that's easy, let's do it!

Today can act as a liferaft for anybody who is still stuck without a decent song from January, or as a bonus exercise to the rest.

What is a descending bass line?

The ear tends to respond well to a simple stepped line of notes within a chord progression, following the scale upwards or downwards. In the 17th century, descending bass lines found favour for example Bach's orchestral suites - the famous Air on a G String, and Handel's organ concertos all contain very similar harmonisations of the descending major scale. When this was reintroduced into mid-20th century pop music, it brought with it many baroque trappings eg: The Beatles' "For No One", Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale", and The Steve Miller Band's "Dear Mary" and "Baby's House".

But really I need to pick up my guitar to show you so here's the video:

Havering Folk Club News

23rd January 2011

Hi Haverfolk,

Peter here with the latest newsletter.

Last Session:

Our session last Wednesday saw Clive & Linda Paish, otherwise known as Ploughman’s Lunch, make their debuts as joint MCs and they kept the evening running well to time, making sure everyone got two spots.

After taking the opening spot themselves, as is customary, they introduced Bernie Pilgrim, Foxen, Smolowik, Helen Tegg, Jim Coombes, Clara Barker – a virgin Haverlady from the Isle of Man, Margaret Brown, Bert Dady & Keith Petty, Pep Pepper & Terry Jones, Bob Cash, Jane Thomson, Tony Thomson, Helen Islip, Dave Worley and Linda Worley. To finish off there was a join-in version of Wild Rover for as many as would.

Haverfolks’ Outside Activities:

I mentioned the next session of Smolowik’s Four Seasons Folk Club last week, but it seems I forgot to mention the date – so even I’m not perfect!

So, taking it from the top:  Four Seasons Folk Club, Polska YMCA, 20 Gunnersbury Ave., London, W5 3QL. Nearest underground Ealing Common, District & Piccadilly lines. Saturday, 5th February. Concert begins at 7pm sharp and finishes at 10pm. Arriving at 6.30pm is recommended. Bring own drinks and nibbles, cups and plates provided. Featured artists will be Ian Martin, Andy Roberts, Smolowik, Smolen (with P. Smolen and A Kotowicz.

Other Stuff:

Talking Elephant are still running their January sales with 30% off many of their CD titles and they have new titles and downloads as well. There are currently five titles by Horslips (anyone a fan?), including live at the 02, new Mawkin Causley and too many other things to mention here. Have a look at www.talkingelephant.co.uk  You can also sign up for their newsletter if sufficiently interested.

The Golden Lion usually has a weekly special offer on either meals or drinks. Useful on a Wednesday evening and also other days if you’re in striking distance. E-mail tavern@tavern.fbmta.com to be put on their mailing list.

Mary Bryan, Chairman of Essex Folk Association, was injured in a road accident on Thursday 20th January sustaining a fractured leg. At the moment she’s in hospital in Romford. Mary is very well known in the local folk world and no doubt all who know her will  wish her a speedy recovery.

Back to HFC:

Next Wednesday, 26th January is another of our open sessions – all welcome to perform or simply to enjoy.

The following week, February 2nd we have guest artists The Kittiwakes who made a big impression when they played a floor spot here a few months ago..

Don’t forget, our next three sessions will be held at The Sun, 47 London Road, Romford, RM7 9QA during renovation work at The Golden Lion, the same room as Romford Folk Club – thanks for arranging it Mick!

So make it a date – Wednesday at eight!

Cheers – Peter

January Challenge - London Songwriters (London, England) - Meetup

Does your songwriting ever get stuck? I decided to do something about it in January and set up a challenge. Then I invited other songwriters to join me. It's not too late to get involved and catch up if you wanted to do a few daily exercises to stretch your boundaries and flex the creative muscles.

Walking Video

I set off for my walk a bit late in the day but once I'd left the pavements behind I began to find my feet. The conditions were not ideal, it's better when you have all the time in the world, nowhere to go and nothing to come back for. But it's January, and that's the whole point, to do it anyway - or at least to set off. The phrase came up about "Old Bones" which has an appealing sound to it, but after working on it and singing for a few minutes the dreaded self-editing part of the brain kicked in and made me feel like it was a really unfortunate topic to choose for a song.

Rather than waste the walk and go home with nothing, I felt in my pocket for the little Canon compact camera that's always there and decided to try and make a video while walking. If it worked I'd have a video to post for Day 6, and if it didn't - well at least I'd have the tune and some lyrics laid down in digital so I wouldn't have to write them down when I got back. The video is good enough I think, to illustrate the technique of going for a walk to make up a tune, I hope. I like the shots of my feet, and the added explanation of using double time and half time beats so you can write both fast and slow tunes to the rhythm of the walking.

When I got back I showed the video to Linda and we came up at least two ways of getting around the dismal attitude of the lyrics. One is to keep the tune and treat the lyrics as an example of "scrambled eggs", writing new lyrics to fit the tune later, and the other is to develop the story from the point of view of an old man who lived to a ripe old age despite his mother having been told he'd never make old bones, which is kind of what I had at the back of my mind before I got demoralised by the repetitious doctor.
