Wicked Messenger: Bob Dylan and the 1960s

It's Bob Dylan's 70th birthday today.

Wicked Messenger: Bob Dylan and the 1960s | MikeMarqusee.com

Mike Marqusee restores the forgotten moral and political contexts of Dylan’s supernova years. In doing so, he rescues one of the most urgent poetic voices in American history from the condescension of his own later cynicism.

Obama abroad

The economic driving imperative is fundamental. Eveything else is just words and fluff.

Obama abroad | MikeMarqusee.com
http://www.mikemarqusee.com/?p=1165

Crucially, Obama insists that democracy must be accompanied by what he calls “economic reform”, the neo-liberal prescriptions that have already exacerbated poverty, inequality and corruption in many west Asian and north African states and against which the Arab Spring was in part a revolt. He wants the new democracies to prove their credentials by opening their doors to predatory multi-nationals and exposing themselves to destructive international competition. All of his proposals for debt relief and aid are tied to this model, which Obama identified with the free-booting capitalism that wrought havoc in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Understanding the latest Facebook scam

Understanding the latest Facebook scam

Every few weeks there's a new scam that makes the rounds on Facebook.
This week it's the "Find out who visits your profile," scam, which
we've all seen before. Here we take a deeper look at the scam to
understand better what exactly the virus is trying to do and how we
can all protect ourselves.

The virus works first by gaining access to your Facebook account.
Unlike other methods for hacking, which involve somehow accessing your
login credentials, this scam needs only for you to click a link posted
on your wall or someone else's wall. To entice you into clicking, the
scam offers something lots of people would love to know, but Facebook
doesn't allow: a list of people who've viewed your profile. You might
receive an e-mail notification that tells you a friend has posted a
link on your wall with this context:

"LOL !! Me cant believe that you can see who is viewing your profile!
I can see the TOP 10 people and I am really OPENMOUTHED that my EX is
still checking my Pix and my Profile. You can also see WH0 CHECKS YOUR
PR0FILE here)"

The most important thing to understand about this scam is that you
should not click the link. If you don't click the link and opt-in, the
virus is rendered powerless. If you click the link, and you happen to
be logged into your Facebook account when you do, the virus
immediately goes to work posting the same link and content on your
friends' walls. There's no way to stop it in progress — the only way
to repair the damage is to visit each of your friends' walls
one-by-one and remove the post, or message all and hope they haven't
already clicked the link, as well.

Within social networks users are largely accountable for their own
safety. The primary thing to remember: if you have any doubt, don't
click the link. Facebook offers this bit of advice:

"Always use caution when clicking on a link or opening an attachment,
even if it's been sent or posted by a friend or other reputable
source. If you have any doubt, get confirmation directly from the
sender. Be especially wary of messages that include attractive offers
or urgent requests, and watch out for links that require you to
immediately provide a login.

Article: BBC News - Tidal energy trial in Thames offers glimpse of future

The River Thames in London has an enormous tidal change twice a day so it makes sense to try and harness some of that as a renewable energy source.

BBC News - Tidal energy trial in Thames offers glimpse of future
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13443663

The turbines can operate at a range of depths

A tidal energy farm providing green energy to London could become a reality if a two-month trial proves successful.

A tidal turbine is being installed in the River Thames alongside World War II ship HQS Wellington in central London.

If the trial proves successful and does not adversely affect the environment, hundreds of turbines could be installed between Kent and London.

Energy company Nautricity said a tidal energy farm would generate enough electricity to power 35,000 homes.

Earthquake in Spain, Murcia, Lorca

Murcia is Spain's most seismically active area and suffered earthquake
tremors in 2005 and 1999. It is close to the large faultline beneath
the Mediterranean Sea where the European and African continents meet.

A Murcia regional government statement said eight people, including
one child, had died in the two quakes at Lorca which seriously damaged
many buildings and crushed vehicles. A total of 167 people were
treated in hospitals in the city.

Television images showed cars that were crushed by falling rubble, and
large cracks in buildings.

Some things I can't do on the ipad 2 yet.

So this is an experimental blog post feeding the output from a mind map directly via eamil to the blog. The mind map software is ithoughtsHD as recommended by Ed Dale and MacSparky, and it's an addition to one I made early in order to accumulate some tasks I needed to do when I get back on my iMac again. So the first one was a kind of to do list, which is against the spirit of action logging I know, but sometimes I need the memory aid in special circumstances.

I've had an intense unplanned two weeks or so learning curve with my new iPad 2, and it's been enlightening and fun on the whole, but occasionally frustrating as well.
In theory there are only about 20-30% of activities which cannot be done easily on the iPad, but in practice they can soon mount up into a bit of a backlog. I've tried to avoid getting involved in really complicated workflows which are basically workarounds to make up for the deliberately isolated structure of the IOS apps system.

Other things I haven't mentioned are native OSX apps such as Market Samurai, or Firefox plugins, which haven't been ported to iPad yet, if at all.

The iThoughtsHD output to email process includes a number of different formats and here they are:

  • cant do on ipad
  • adding autolinks into wordpress blog posts
  • of course this is a bit like thinks to do on the iMac
  • the difference being here I might try to find ways to do them on the iPad eventually
  • podcasts
    • broadcast with livestream
    • edit sound files in audacity
  • facebook
    • leave groups
    • manage pages on 2nd page
  • Google Reader
    • add subscriptions
    • unsubscribe
  • gmail
    • add filters
  • Wordpress
    • edit longer posts
    • add categories after the first few in the list
    • reorganise categories?

According to the current Wikipedia entry, Truro is the eighth smallest city in the UK, after St Davids, and two in Norther Ireland plus the City of London which is a bit of an anomoly really, and Truro would also be the third smalles city in England after Ely and Ripon.

    iPad2 mind maps

The iPad 2 is very useful for making mind maps, so I made a mind map
of all the things I need to do when I can get back on my iMac that
can't be done on the iPad2 yet.

Wild parakeets seen as a threat in the UK

I think these are just one particular species of parakeet, the monk parakeet which can apparantly cause damage to electricity pylons. The ever increasing rose ringed or ring necked parakeets that we see fly overhead on a daily basis shoudn't be affected by any cull. They might be able to be shot like pigeons , though, if crop farmers are affected and apply for a license to do so. The local parakeets are a bit noisy as in raucous, so it would be a shame in some ways if they kept on increasing and drowned out the native song birds.

Wild parakeets seen as a threat in the UK

Because of damaging food crops and being a threat to native wildlife, parakeets in Britain living in the wild may be culled. Originally from South America they were released from captivity in the 90s and the grey, yellow and green birds are living in the south of England.

There are only between 125 and 150 that live in the entire UK nevertheless the decision to exterminate them has been taken but conservative groups are calling for them to be re-homed instead of being shot.

The Department of Environment’s Food and Rural Affairs said that as part of the Defra initiative control is being done to eradicate the potential threat imposed by the parakeets to the native wildlife, crops and national infrastructure. Significant damage has been done by the species in other countries through their activities of feeding and nesting so early preventative action is being taken to stop the same from happening in the UK.

These parakeets build very large communal nests and could cause a threat to the agriculture and our safety since they could cause structural problems with the national electrical supply, said The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds but they should not be shot.

Great Diving Beetle in a small garden pond?

Well this article arrived just on the same day that Linda reported seeing an enormous flying beetle, shiny green coloured, in the back garden near our small pond. We identified the beetle as the great diving beetle and I knew that these insects are viscious predators, at least in the larval form. I'm not going to panic about loosing frog tadpoles though, or even fish fry. As far as I'm concerned if a great diving beetle chooses to use our small garden pond as a nursery for his aquatic offspring then we should be honoured to play host to such an auspicious example of native pond wildlife. I'm sure the frogs will manage to keep up their numbers one way or another.

    Who’d be a tadpole?

    Who’d be a tadpole?

    By Jeremy Biggs

Larva of a great diving beetle feeding on a frog tadpole.

A common question we get at this time of the year is: “Where have my tadpoles gone?”

A common answer is probably provided by this picture from Pond Conservation member Carole Woodall who managed to capture what must be a common fate for many a tadpole. Indeed, it’s probably one of the main fates that nature intended!

And this is not the only way that our precious tadpoles get gobbled up: fish of course are regular frog tadpole eaters and so, to the surprise of many, are our innocent looking newts.

Now of course, almost every normal person loves newts – but not your average tadpole because a tadpole is basically a tasty newt snack.

A common course of events is:

    - Pond lover makes pond, frogs arrive in year 1 or 2, pond lover very happy.

    - Newts arrive in year 4 or 5, pond lover even happier.

    - Tadpoles disappear, pond lover puzzled, calls Pond Conservation.

    - Frog and newt lover discovers newts eat tadpoles and realises newts not quite so cuddly as previously thought.

    - Pond lover becomes older and slightly wiser!

But it’s not all one-way traffic: our clever little frogs have learnt (excuse the anthropomorphism) to steer clear of the nasty newts, and other predators.

Tadpoles can sense the presence of backswimmers and dragonfly larvae, and take avoiding action.

They can also sense fish too.

Although many may still perish, if you are one of the few that gets through, that’s all that matters.
