Crucially, Obama insists that democracy must be accompanied by what he calls “economic reform”, the neo-liberal prescriptions that have already exacerbated poverty, inequality and corruption in many west Asian and north African states and against which the Arab Spring was in part a revolt. He wants the new democracies to prove their credentials by opening their doors to predatory multi-nationals and exposing themselves to destructive international competition. All of his proposals for debt relief and aid are tied to this model, which Obama identified with the free-booting capitalism that wrought havoc in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Understanding the latest Facebook scam Every few weeks there's a new scam that makes the rounds on Facebook.
This week it's the "Find out who visits your profile," scam, which
we've all seen before. Here we take a deeper look at the scam to
understand better what exactly the virus is trying to do and how we
can all protect ourselves. The virus works first by gaining access to your Facebook account.
Unlike other methods for hacking, which involve somehow accessing your
login credentials, this scam needs only for you to click a link posted
on your wall or someone else's wall. To entice you into clicking, the
scam offers something lots of people would love to know, but Facebook
doesn't allow: a list of people who've viewed your profile. You might
receive an e-mail notification that tells you a friend has posted a
link on your wall with this context: "LOL !! Me cant believe that you can see who is viewing your profile!
I can see the TOP 10 people and I am really OPENMOUTHED that my EX is
still checking my Pix and my Profile. You can also see WH0 CHECKS YOUR
PR0FILE here)" The most important thing to understand about this scam is that you
should not click the link. If you don't click the link and opt-in, the
virus is rendered powerless. If you click the link, and you happen to
be logged into your Facebook account when you do, the virus
immediately goes to work posting the same link and content on your
friends' walls. There's no way to stop it in progress — the only way
to repair the damage is to visit each of your friends' walls
one-by-one and remove the post, or message all and hope they haven't
already clicked the link, as well. Within social networks users are largely accountable for their own
safety. The primary thing to remember: if you have any doubt, don't
click the link. Facebook offers this bit of advice: "Always use caution when clicking on a link or opening an attachment,
even if it's been sent or posted by a friend or other reputable
source. If you have any doubt, get confirmation directly from the
sender. Be especially wary of messages that include attractive offers
or urgent requests, and watch out for links that require you to
immediately provide a login.

The River Thames in London has an enormous tidal change twice a day so it makes sense to try and harness some of that as a renewable energy source.

The turbines can operate at a range of depths
A tidal turbine is being installed in the River Thames alongside World War II ship HQS Wellington in central London. If the trial proves successful and does not adversely affect the environment, hundreds of turbines could be installed between Kent and London. Energy company Nautricity said a tidal energy farm would generate enough electricity to power 35,000 homes.
A tidal energy farm providing green energy to London could become a reality if a two-month trial proves successful.

Murcia is Spain's most seismically active area and suffered earthquake
tremors in 2005 and 1999. It is close to the large faultline beneath
the Mediterranean Sea where the European and African continents meet. A Murcia regional government statement said eight people, including
one child, had died in the two quakes at Lorca which seriously damaged
many buildings and crushed vehicles. A total of 167 people were
treated in hospitals in the city. Television images showed cars that were crushed by falling rubble, and
large cracks in buildings.

Some things I can't do on the ipad 2 yet.
So this is an experimental blog post feeding the output from a mind map directly via eamil to the blog. The mind map software is ithoughtsHD as recommended by Ed Dale and MacSparky, and it's an addition to one I made early in order to accumulate some tasks I needed to do when I get back on my iMac again. So the first one was a kind of to do list, which is against the spirit of action logging I know, but sometimes I need the memory aid in special circumstances.
I've had an intense unplanned two weeks or so learning curve with my new iPad 2, and it's been enlightening and fun on the whole, but occasionally frustrating as well.
In theory there are only about 20-30% of activities which cannot be done easily on the iPad, but in practice they can soon mount up into a bit of a backlog. I've tried to avoid getting involved in really complicated workflows which are basically workarounds to make up for the deliberately isolated structure of the IOS apps system.
Other things I haven't mentioned are native OSX apps such as Market Samurai, or Firefox plugins, which haven't been ported to iPad yet, if at all.
The iThoughtsHD output to email process includes a number of different formats and here they are:
- cant do on ipad
- adding autolinks into wordpress blog posts
- of course this is a bit like thinks to do on the iMac
- the difference being here I might try to find ways to do them on the iPad eventually
- broadcast with livestream
- edit sound files in audacity
- leave groups
- manage pages on 2nd page
- add subscriptions
- unsubscribe
- add filters
- edit longer posts
- add categories after the first few in the list
- reorganise categories?
