Havering Folk Club News 25th July 2010
Hi Haverfolk, Pete here once again with this week’s edition of the HFC newsletter
Last Session: Wednesday, 21st July got off to a slowish start with only seven floor-spotters assembled by starting time. However, this number gradually increased and we eventually had seventeen, with some additional audience members as well, which is more like the number we usually expect.
I was MC for the first half and got the evening going. I was followed by Bernie Pilgrim, Margaret Brown, Pep & Terry, Andy Roberts, Foxen, and Jane Thomson. We then heard an HFC virgin, John Clarke, a truly superb guitarist who played one guitar solo, an arrangement of his own, and he followed this with a song, with guitar accompaniment. Everyone enjoyed his spot and we’d love him to come back “as often as will”. Following John was Linda Worley, Steve O’Kane, Fiona McBain, who played a flute solo for the first time at the club – well done Fiona! Last to go before the break was tenor Dave Worley.
After the break I handed the MC honours over to Pep who introduced Kriss Pouch, Tony Thomson, Mikanora (haven’t seen these two for a while – nice to have ‘em back), Phil Duffield and finally, Margaret Nicholson.
With a few minutes left Pep was able to re-introduce Steve O’Kane and Andy Roberts for another song each before he and Terry rounded the evening off.
Other Stuff: I mentioned Mick Spooner’s brother Danny is over from Australia just now. He also has a gig at Waltham Abbey Folk Club, The Royal British Legion, Sewardstone Street, J/O Greenfield Street, Waltham Abbey, EN9 1HY, Jan Ayres 01992 613987, www.walthamabbeyfolkclub.com Danny’s gig is tomorrow, Monday 26th July at 8.30pm.
Sing Out Loud is a group of men and women, of all levels of singing ability, who meet for 10 weeks, each academic term, in Chelmsford, for the joy of singing melody and harmony with others. There are no auditions & no need to read music. There still a few places left on the Summer Singing Workshop, on Sunday, 15th August. Pre-booking is essential. We have quite a few new subscribers since I last mentioned Bandstand Busking. This is a group of people who get together and organise a series of music sessions at some of the many disused bandstands around London parks, usually on a Sunday afternoon. You can either go along just to listen to the artists or bands, but you can also get yourself on their list of artists for a booking with them. They have quite a few video clips on their website so have look at www.bandstandbusking.com
Stortfolk will be changing their venue from Thursday, September 9th. The new one will be the lounge of The Royal British Legion, 28 Windhill, Bishop’s Stortford, CM23 3HJ. The first night will be a singers’ night and all are welcome, either to perform or simply to go along and listen. Back to HFC: Next Wednesday, 28th July is another open session. Everyone is welcome to come along either to perform or simply to be a member of the audience.
The following week Haverman Phil Duffield has his featured evening, so we’d like to see as many Haverfolk as possible along to support him. I know he’s been working very hard to get an interesting programme together for us.
I feel a bit guilty really as this will be the first member’s featured evening I’ve ever missed, but I just couldn’t persuade them to change the date of the Sidmouth Folk Festival!

The Great Fire Everyone knows that the Great Fire of London started at a baker's in
Pudding Lane. Reeling from plague and war, and torn apart by sectarian
tensions, many Londoners believed the fire had been started deliberately by
foreign enemies living within their midst. As the city burned, Londoners
hunted the foreign fire-starters. After an orgy of rage and violence, the mob found a scapegoat - a Frenchman
who claimed to have committed this act of terror - and demanded their pound
of flesh. But as stories of hardship and heroism emerged, the authorities
found evidence that London's foreign communities had been more loyal than
they could ever have imagined. TX 28 June at 9pm The Battle of Trafalgar Nelson famously signalled the Battle of Trafalgar with the words: 'England
expects that every man will do his duty'. However, 1400 of the 18,000
sailors fighting for King and Country were not British, with 25 different
nationalities press-ganged into serving the British King. Analysing the
records of warship HMS Bellerophon has enabled historians to reveal their
fascinating story. The Navy recruited hundreds of men from all over the world, including many
ex-slaves from the West Indies and America. For many, the Royal Navy was
the world's first equal opportunities employer, offering freedom and equal
pay. This film pays tribute to the diverse nationalities that sailed on 21
October 1805 to take part in the bloodiest battle in naval history. TX 29 June at 9pm Britain's African Emperor In a mountainous land at the edge of its empire, the world's only
superpower was bogged down in an asymmetric war against deadly insurgents.
Sound familiar? But this happened almost 2000 years ago. This is the story
of the little known and only black Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, an
African who seized Rome's imperial throne and fought a brutal campaign to
subdue northern Britain. In 207AD Severus marched over Hadrian's Wall with a vast army, but the
Britons attacked the Roman patrols and then melted back into the mountains.
He died four years later in York, unable to defeat the enemy north of The
Wall and helping create the English-Scottish divide familiar to us today. TX 30 June at 9pm The Polish Battle of Britain During the most decisive phase of the Battle of the Britain, a single
squadron of 34 Polish fighter pilots wreaked havoc on the Luftwaffe,
helping change the course of history. The story of 303 Squadron is an
extraordinary episode in the Second World War. The Polish Pilots faced a
bitter struggle for acceptance when they first arrived in this country. As the Battle of Britain got underway, inexperienced British pilots were
paying a heavy cost. Belatedly, the Poles were cleared for active service
and had an immediate impact. They were the highest scoring RAF squadron,
but as the war ended their joy turned to despair as they saw their country
handed to Stalin. TX 1 July at 9pm History Games Alongside the Bloody Foreigners series, Channel 4 Education has launched
two new history games. Trafalgar Origins is an online flash game
highlighting the importance of foreigners in the navy. It is created by
award winning creative studio Preloaded, with extraordinary historical
accuracy advised by Brian Lavery, Curator Emeritus at the Greenwich

London Gets Uglier with Skyscrapers UnlimitedThere are several large skyscraper building projects underway or planned in London currently. Some are just holes in the ground, but others are growing up into the skyline already.  Heron Tower - under construction This one, called Heron Tower (46 floors) , near Liverpool Street Station seems to dwarf the elegant 30 St Mary Axe building nearby (The Gherkin, 41 floors) but it looks like a giant mechano set, brutal and unforgiving straight lines with a relentless symmetry. And when its finished, it won’t look much better. Heron Tower itself is due to be dwarfed in turn by another new skyscraper building close by dubbed “The Pinnacle” at Crosby Court or Bishopgate Tower ( 60 floors) which has a little twist on the top, in an attempt to ask forgiveness for excessively towering over the City of London and over on the other side of the river at London Bridge Station they’ve already started building “The Shard” or London Bridge Tower (87 floors). his own unique style. Doug Morter has played in Albion Band and Magna
Carta. He has worked with David Bowie, Richard Digance, Ralph McTell,

Last Week: I was tied up trying to get a difficult video edit completed on Wednesday, 19th May and so didn’t arrive until later in the evening. Simon was stuck at work as well, so the task of getting things set up and manning the desk fell to Gill.
Dave & Linda Worley were just back from a trip to The States visiting their son who lives and works there, and Gill unashamedly imposed on Dave’s good nature and pressed him into service as MC for the evening. Well done for doing a good job at such short notice Dave!
Having taken the first slot himself as per HFC tradition, he introduced Foxen, a solo spot from Terry Jones minus the rest of the Hillbillies on this occasion, Margaret Brown, Bernie & Maureen Pilgrim, Kriss Pouch, Smolowik, Dennis Homes, Linda Worley, Phil Duffield, and Jane Thomson before taking the break.
Following the break, my having now arrived, Dave brought me on for my spot, followed by Tony Thomson then Uggy Brown & Lou Louis. Uggy & Lou are sort of half-virgins. They came along late-ish on Hillbillies’ featured evening but we didn’t have time to fit them in. This time we did and they displayed some excellent musicianship, Uggy getting some beautiful, mellow sounds from his nylon-stringed classical and Lou matching him on mandolin.
We even had time to fit several in for another song, which doesn’t happen all that often nowadays.
A group of five friends came up to watch proceedings this evening, some of whom play as well. They’d chanced to see the posters in the bar of the Lion, but didn’t have their instruments with them. One of them, Avril, told me we wouldn’t welcome her instrument at the club, the Highland pipes, but she’s wrong; we would! An enthusiastic “Yes” was the result when I asked everyone, so what about it Avril? We enjoy and appreciate Vicki’s smallpipes, so we hope to see you with your Highlands soon.
Haverfolks’ Outside Activities: Margaret Brown and Barbara Reeder were at the May Fayre at Havering-atte-Bower yesterday with their belly dancing among numerous other acts. Unfortunately I received the info too late to include it in last week’s newsletter – hope the day went well ladies.
This Tuesday, 25th May, our guv’nor Simon Oliver has an extended gig at Romford Folk Club, The Sun, London Road, Romford. The session starts at 8pm and there will be a few floor spots as well.
Richard Staines has another gig on Sunday, May 30th at 8.30pm. This one’s at The Portland Arms, 63 Portland Road, St. Albans, Herts.
Don’t forget gang, I’m always happy to publish news of any gigs you may have or other news, but you need to tell me about them in time as I won’t necessarily pick them up otherwise.
Other Stuff: A few of you may remember Sue Clark who used to come occasionally to HFC and also to also to the Sail Loft. She still receives our newsletter and has corresponded to say that she and Grahame now have a river cruiser on the Thames and are planning to turn it into a hotel boat. You can find more details at www.isabellarivercruises.co.uk and although not shown on the site, they will be offering first year reduced rates to acquaintances, including Haverfolk – sounds great stuff to me.
Clem Vickery is publisher of BMG Magazine (Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar) and will be publishing a profile of the club in the next issue. He’s also director of Clifford Essex Music Company Ltd., who are now producing the Clifford Essex “Gambler” hand-made banjo available from September onwards. Back to HFC: This coming Wednesday, 26th May is another open session to which all are welcome, and the following week, 2nd June sees the return by popular demand of our guest artists Suntrap.
